Future Focus

In high school, the junior and senior years play a crucial role in shaping a student's future. To help our students prepare as effectively as possible, we offer a program called Future Focus. This program is designed for sophomores who may need assistance in understanding what their next few years could look like in order to help prepare them for decisions after high school. Future Focus invites a mix of familiar adults and new faces who share their post-high school experiences and provide guidance on making informed decisions. Students learn that “college” means anything from the traditional college classes to trade schools and other post-high school certification programs. They also learn about available resources, scholarships, and college financial aid, ensuring they understand they’re not alone in this journey. Many students who are uncertain about their path, or who face challenges, have found this program to be invaluable. They are exposed to opportunities and information they may not have known about otherwise.

A special thank you goes to our English 12 teacher, Mrs. Verellen, for working with kids on thinking about scholarships and what college really means now. Mrs. Vasher, our Career Navigator, and Mr. Johnson, our Career and Technical Education Director, both discussed CTE, job shadowing, and work study opportunities students will have in the next couple of years. Mid Michigan College mentors came to talk to students about the different supports colleges have now for academic and other needs. Finally, Principal Brown wrapped up the weekly series to talk about the real obstacles people have to overcome, which primarily includes their own mindset.

The benefits of Future Focus have proven to be a game changer, helping our students navigate their growth and future decisions with confidence. As a result, they gain a clearer understanding of what their future plans could be and the resources available to help them plan intentionally.
